Social Media and the First Amendment

Dear John,

Do you have an unlimited right to free speech online? What role does the state have in ensuring comments, thoughts, and ideas are not censored? What rights do tech companies have to decide what kinds of speech are tolerated on their platforms? These questions and more will soon be at heart of case before the Supreme Court.

This brand-new lesson uses the First Amendment and a recent Texas Tribune article to help students anaylze and discuss these major questions. It is designed to help you get your students thinking about how the pending Supreme Court decision could affect them, why this question has arisen now, and what it might the new Supreme Court Case could mean for individual liberty.

New Think the Vote Question!

Should Social Media Companies Have the Power to Remove Content From Their Platforms? Pose this new Think the Vote question to your students and have them share their answers online. Think the Vote is designed to engage students in current events and practice the art of civil discourse.

A prize is awarded to the student with the best answer and analysis. Winners are then submitted into a grand prize drawing at the end of the year for an additional student prize. Teachers are also awarded prizes for student winners!
