Our SCOTUS accountability sign-on letter Indivisibles,
On Monday, alongside partners, we delivered a letter with almost half a million signatures to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin demanding they address corruption in the Supreme Court.
Those boxes right there contain page after page of signers saying, “We will not accept a court that is corrupt. We will not accept a court that accepts bribes. We need court reform today.”
All through the month of September, we accepted signatures from Indivisibles, reminding them that the Supreme Court continues to show itself as a massive ball of corruption. Whether it’s Justice Thomas accepting millions of dollars in lavish gifts, travel, and more -- so many that he had to file a corrections section in his most recent disclosure form -- or Justice Alito proclaiming that “no provision in the Constitution gives [Congress] the authority to regulate the Supreme Court -- period” in the Wall Street Journal, we find ourselves in a SCOTUS legitimacy crisis of the justices’ own making.
But contrary to Alito’s pronouncement, Congress does have the constitutional authority to address the legitimacy crisis in the Supreme Court.
Here’s our very own Meagan Hatcher-Mays saying it best: “...they need to pass a code of ethics like the one in the SCERT Act and they must, must, must, must subpoena these people if they won't appear willingly."
So, what happens when hundreds of thousands of activists speak out? Later that very same day, Senators Dick Durbin and Sheldon Whitehouse announced that the Senate Judiciary Committee will vote to subpoena Harlan Crow, Leonard Leo, and Robin Arkley II -- key figures in the SCOTUS corruption scandal -- to participate in the committee’s ethics investigation.
When you make a noise, it will be heard.
We don’t often get to show you the direct results of Indivisibles’ efforts in advocacy -- it is a long journey with many stops along the way -- so it is extra special, in this case, to get to show you the direct results of your work and your advocacy.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease; we are the wheel with a bullhorn! We get loud, and we don’t stop until the world is a better place.
This message is a thank you to all Indivisibles who never stop speaking out! You change the world.
In solidarity, Indivisible Team
