Dear New Yorkers,

Capital projects are the beating heart of our city’s infrastructure. Every bridge we repair, every park we build, every public school facility we renovate helps improve and enrich our shared lives as New Yorkers.

But the unfortunate reality is that NYC’s capital construction process wastes millions of taxpayer dollars every year and delays the delivery of critical infrastructure to our neighborhoods.

That’s why I’m so excited to tell you about New York City’s first-ever comprehensive capital projects tracker, which just launched in partnership with Mayor Adams and his team.

This new tool is a user-friendly public dashboard that details all projects from major capital agencies.

It provides a detailed view into the city’s construction projects, spanning critical infrastructure such as bridges, sewers, sanitation, and parks. It includes the total cost, current phase, and projected completion date projects, as well as additional details for all construction.

I’ve been pushing for a comprehensive capital projects tracker for over a decade, because it brings radical transparency to what’s going on with the city’s capital spending. Funny enough, my idea for this “paw-some” tracker started with a dog park – the DiMattina Dog Run in Brooklyn, to be exact.

It’s no secret that capital projects in NYC take too long, cost too much, and deliver too little. It is terribly hard to track timelines and spending for capital projects. I became acutely aware of this as a City Council Member breaking ground on the DiMattina Dog Run back in 2013.

I was thinking about how when New Yorkers vote to fund capital projects through participatory budgeting, like the DiMattina Dog Run, they ought to know when the project is being completed and how their taxpayer dollars are being spent. So my team and I created a tracker for projects funded by participatory budgeting in my council district.

But I quickly realized that we needed a centralized, citywide capital projects tracker. Not just for public transparency—but so that City agencies could know where things stood. So while I was still a Council Member, I sponsored Local Law 37, which mandates the creation of a such a citywide tracker.

I am thrilled and proud that the capital projects tracker is finally here, and grateful for the Administration’s partnership in prioritizing infrastructure and capital process reform

Is there a capital project ongoing in your neighborhood? Track it now with our new tool.

Thanks,

Brad
