Republicans may have chosen a Speaker, but we still haven’t funded our government with a shutdown looming in fifteen days.
As the majority party, the GOP could fund the government if they tried to pass a continuing resolution that provides aid for Ukraine and Israel, funds social services, and allows the IRS to crack down on tax cheats.
But the GOP would rather hold that aid hostage and tie it to defunding the IRS. They want to withhold important funds for one of our closest allies because they want their wealthy friends to be able to avoid paying their taxes.
This is a gross political game that House Republicans are playing, but it’s nothing they haven’t shown us before. I remain committed to funding our government, providing assistance to our allies, and funding Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. I remain committed to ensuring that billionaires pay their fair share in taxes.
I’ll continue fighting to fund our government in its entirety here in Washington, and I’ll continue to keep you updated along the way.
