John, my name is Sari Beth Rosenberg, and I need to tell you a story. Just a few weeks ago, we had a gun scare at my school.

Now, I’ve been a New York City public school teacher for 21 years. You’d think I’d seen everything by now – but in some ways, that’s the problem.

What struck me the most was that we all knew what to do. Luckily no one got hurt, but we are all damaged by this public health crisis, living in a constant state of knowing it will eventually reach our classroom doors, too.

That’s why my colleagues and I started Teachers Unify: to actually voice that feeling, and use our voices to create change. But we’re teachers, not fundraisers – and fighting back against the gun lobby is expensive.

We have a huge deadline coming up and can’t raise the $20,000 we need without your help. So I have to ask: Will you donate $25 right now to amplify the voices of educators and school staff, end this epidemic, and make schools safer? >> ([link removed])

John, we all agree that schools should always be a safe space. But we also have to be prepared to have that safety taken away. And as a teacher, I’m tired of constantly thinking of an escape plan.

But teachers have been left out of solving this crisis. Sometimes we have “solutions” spoken for us – without a space for our voices to be heard.

Teachers around the country are strong, unified, and ready to act. Our movement is powerful, and we know how to be a safe space for each other – a brave space for each other. But we also know that creating the change we need takes funding, and to get that, we have to work together.
