House Republicans want to establish a closed-door commission to “tackle the nation’s debt”. Why the backdoor discussions? Because their proposed tax plan will add trillions of dollars to the national debt which they want to pay for by slashing OUR services–they do not want their constituents to see them slashing funding for nutrition and health programs that prevent children from going hungry.

If Congress was serious about tackling the national debt, they’d make the ultra-wealthy and multi-billion dollar corporations start paying their fair share in taxes. Yet, of course, the proposed House GOP budget resolution does not include raising revenues from the wealthiest.

Instead of backdoor attacks on important programs, Congress should do their job—they can and must commit to raising revenues by taxing wealthy corporations while investing in human needs.

Sign and send the petition to Congress demanding they reject a backdoor Debt Commission that could lead to cuts to critical human needs programs.
