Youth Vote Interns
Arianna Lema I became an organizer after the pandemic, I saw my community needed help. I felt like the bridge that helped get resources to everyone from health organizations. I transitioned from health aspects to voter education/participation a little over a year ago. Organizing is extremely important to the area I grew up in, we need more visibility in politics. I need to help my community realize the voting power we have.
[[link removed]] Ensuring a strong Democratic bench in California begins with family conversations and engagement at home. I firmly believe that the foundation of political involvement lies within one's own household. It's vital to foster a culture of civic participation within the family unit. Together, we can create a ripple effect of change by collectively advocating for Democratic values.
Renna Hickey Inspired by the Central Valley’s organizing history, I learned that I wanted to work and study politics. I decided to be a Democrat because of the diversity and inclusiveness of my community and home.Gun control and reproductive freedom were issues that became a personal to me as extreme Republicans worked to roll back our most basic human rights. I strongly believe exercising our right to vote and protecting the democratic process is key to ensuring that the next generation is heard.
[[link removed]] Through my work to register voters, phone bank, and recruit volunteers, I hope to make a change in our community.
Jill Morton In 2020, I was a freshman in high school, and after seeing everything happening in the country, I knew we needed more Democrats elected. That year, I got involved with my congressman’s campaign as a volunteer, and then a year later, I became a campaign fellow and fell in love with organizing. I joined CADEM in June as a part of the summer internship program.
[[link removed]] The main topics and issues I am passionate about are LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, and lowering the cost of higher education. The ways that I help build the democratic bench in California are by registering students to vote in these battleground districts and phone banking into these areas.
Maryam Idowu Originally I was born in Abeokuta Nigeria, and moved to the US when I was little and grew up in Inglewood, Los Angeles. I now currently live in Madera, California. The way that I became an organizer for CADEM all started when I organized a BLM protest in Madera on the day of my graduation. From there I started working with the Madera Dem club and volunteered during different events and even went on to work for both local, and congressional campaigns like Esmeralda’s Soria and Adam Gray.
[[link removed]] I joined CADEM because as I got to work with many people in the party I realized that I have a powerful voice and If I continue to use it I can make change and the people I have met along the journey have helped me with making those changes. I want to continue doing that and what better way than to join hands and work together with people who are working hard to create a better thriving country for all.
Kalila Garcia I am originally from Oakland California, but right Now I live in Yolo County attending the University of California Davis. I became an organizer during the 2016 election. Being under 18 I wasn’t able to vote myself, so I began to do voter canvassing making sure that the students at my school, the people in my city were registered. I became a democrat because I saw it as accepting and supporting all Americans defending our rights to make our own choices about our bodies, to protect our planet for the future and to allow America’s diverse population to flourish.
[[link removed]] I joined California Democrats because it is never too early to care for our future. We are a year out from the next election and every second counts. California has such a large sway over the federal policy that we have to act. With elections being won by a few hundred votes there is no room to believe our voice doesn't matter.
Zadie Waletzko I started organizing around the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, by creating a student activist group that helped organize protests across the city. Our first event attracted over 1,000 attendees and since then, I have been inspired by the power of collective action.
[[link removed]] Throughout high school, I held progressive values about fighting wealth inequality, protecting abortion rights, and achieving racial equity. As I became more politically engaged in college, I found that these were values supported by the Democratic Party. As part of the first election I was able to vote in, I joined the Salud Carbajal for Congress Campaign to help register students to vote. Since that election, I have been a proud Democrat and am excited to now be part of the CADEM organizing team!

Sue Chandler
Chair, South Lake Tahoe Democratic Club
I am originally from White Plains, NY. I went to the University of Maine and taught high school science in Maine for six years. I then moved to Athens, Greece where I taught for six years at the American Community School. Afterward, I moved to Bangkok Thailand where I taught for 30 years at the International School Bangkok. In Bangkok I met the love of my life and gave birth to two beautiful young ladies. I retired seven years ago and now live permanently in South Lake Tahoe, CA.
I have always been interested in politics. In college I went to two anti-war protests in Washington, DC. While living overseas, it was difficult to put boots on the ground. I contributed financially but was frustrated by not being able to be more proactive.
Upon retirement I wanted to get involved in South Lake Tahoe. I was surprised to learn that there was no Democratic Club in South Lake Tahoe. I really wanted to work to try to vote out McClintock, and vote in Democrat Bob Derlet. I made some inquiries and discovered that there was a defunct club which I resurrected. We now have a mailing list of 450 folks and a paid membership of about 120 folks. We support local, state, and national candidates that share our democratic values. It has been a great way to connect with the local community advocating for equality and sustainability in our community.
As 2024 approaches our club will work to promote candidates, democratic values and get out the vote, especially for young voters and declined to state voters.
