Dear Friend,
More than 12,500 people are dead or missing as a result of the devastating flood that hit the city of Derna in September, according to the World Health Organization. This catastrophic event in which thousands of Libyans died and so many others lost their homes and their loved ones has exposed the devastating human cost of corruption. Years of graft and a lack of structural maintenance for two dams fatally contributed to these tragic events.
The Sentry has a special unit that has been investigating the exponential growth of corruption across Libya’s economy. Our forthcoming report outlining systemic corruption has been cited in the Washington Post’s coverage of the tragedy and was quoted in The New York Times:
“A kleptocratic boom, in east and west Libya alike, has led to the decay of infrastructure all across the country, including the Derna dams.”
Please donate now to help The Sentry uncover and address corruption in Libya. [[link removed]]
The warlords and corrupt politicians who have ruled Libya for the past decade have neglected essential infrastructure projects, preferring to line their pockets with public funds. Corruption is deeply entrenched across this war-torn country. Without significant interventions, it will undermine any attempts at rebuilding, public infrastructure will continue to fail, and more lives will be lost.
For the people in Derna to rebuild safely and sustainably, we must make sure this never happens again. Your support is essential as we seek to make it harder for Libya’s corrupt leaders and their global collaborators to loot with impunity.
We cannot change the current systems that are devastating lives and communities without your support. Donate now to help The Sentry dismantle the kleptocratic networks controlling Libya’s future. [[link removed]]
Sincerely,
John Prendergast
