Each year from October 31 to November 2, Latinx communities around the
country and Latin America celebrate Día de los Muertos y Difuntos, or Day
of the Dead—a tradition commemorating those who have passed away.
This tradition offers practitioners a way to connect to the spiritual
world and honor those who are no longer in the physical world. Día de los
Muertos allows us to collectively build resilience and strength, reminding
us that our struggles and liberation are bound to one another.
This Día de los Muertos, we remember those who were taken from us by
everyday gun violence or the mass tragedies our community has endured: the
Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, the Walmart shooting in El
Paso, Texas, and the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
Join me in commemorating those who were taken by gun violence by demanding
action on gun safety today.
