To Cut Truck Traffic, NYC Looks to its Waterways

New York City launched a call Wednesday for maritime companies to give feedback on how to support the movement of cargo through local harbors.
Despite being a city of islands, New York’s waterways carry less than 10 percent of freight, according to the Department of Transportation. But city officials say the underutilization of this resource is about to change
—an effort to cut back on the use of greenhouse gas-producing delivery trucks, which has soared in recent years due to the rise of e-commerce.
"We’re seeing a lot more truck traffic as a result of the demand for same day, next day delivery. And it’s not sustainable," said Kendra Hems, president of the Trucking Association of New York, who is supportive of the city’s waterway program.
