Perlstein will publish a book of the same name in 2025: “The triangle is the three forces that intertwine with nearly equal responsibility in getting America within spitting distance of losing its democracy,” he says. “Republican authoritarianism, Democratic timorousness, and media incompetence.” He recently discussed this with David Dayen, the Prospect’s executive editor.
Perlstein notes that mainstream media analysis of an attempted coup by Trump, et al., has been almost exclusively “how will this play in the swing states” or “who’s winning the messaging war.”

“This is how republics die,” Perlstein laments. “I can’t begin to express my shame.”
