For too many years, states and their agencies have become increasingly addicted to federal money, even coming to the conclusion that they cannot function without it. As Christopher Jacobs describes, however, it doesn't have to be this way. Money means control, and red states who claim to be sovereign should be the first to declare themselves free from the imprisonment. If Red States Don’t Want Federal Meddling, They Should Reject Federal Funding

A former boss of mine used to have a matter-of-fact saying about one’s employment: “If you don’t like the working conditions, don’t take the check.”

Some states have rediscovered the wisdom of that axiom regarding their relationships with Washington. Their willingness to refuse Washington’s checks has prompted the latest round of media pearl-clutching.
