You won’t believe Josh Hawley’s latest stunt, John.
He’s claiming his latest bill would “reverse” the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United — a decision in favor of an organization that Hawley’s proudly taken endorsements and max-out checks from. Or at least, that’s how he’s marketing it.
Like all his other legislation, this is just a campaign prop. It’s a fake bill that, upon closer inspection, doesn’t do anything. But don’t just take our word for it.
Experts across the country are calling him out — including author Jane Mayer, who literally wrote the book on dark money in American politics (Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right):
The bottom line here is that the elites buying our elections got what they paid for when they supported Hawley. His bill won’t even affect them — since Citizens United is registered as a nonprofit — and it won’t stop billionaires and corporate elites from funding the groups responsible for flooding our democracy with dark money.
Hawley’s deceit is a real threat to our democracy and we can’t afford another six years of a fraud like him representing Missouri in the U.S. Senate.
