Social media companies must stop giving groups a platform for hate.
Over the last month, hate group LibsOfTikTok–a right-wing, anti-LGBTQ+ social media presence–targeted nearly a dozen schools or school districts over anti-LGBTQ+ “grooming” conspiracies. Shortly after these attacks, some of the targeted institutions received bomb threats.
LibsOfTikTok was able to incite harassment, trolling, and even bomb threats to our schools, full of our children, because they had a platform to spit the vitriol. Over half a million viewers witnessed a single tweet by them ridiculing an elementary school on a single platform. And this isn't the first time they’ve put our children in harm’s way for the sake of hateful tweets–LibsOfTikTok was reportedly responsible for bomb threats on children’s hospitals, yet they were allowed to remain on social media and continue inciting these threats.

Inciting violence is not protected free speech. Corporations that allow the public to post on their platforms must ensure the law is not violated and that the public is not put at risk. TikTok, the social media platform where the group started, understood this and set the precedent by suspending LibsOfTikTok.
Facebook, Youtube, and X (formerly Twitter) have continued to let this dangerous group spew their violent bigotry without repercussions. These platforms have a responsibility to not put anyone else’s lives in danger. It’s time for these companies to follow TikTok’s lead.
