On August 25, 2023, Kenya experienced its longest nationwide power blackout, lasting over 24 hours. Flights were grounded, restaurants and businesses closed, and more. But perhaps the most concerning of those affected were hospitals and medical centers, where electricity is essential for powering ventilators, vaccine coolers and other devices. Thanks to an on-site solar PV system, one Nairobi hospital was able to remain operational during the entire blackout without resorting to an expensive and polluting diesel generator.
