Distributed Solar Keeps Hospital Operational During Kenya’s Longest Blackout

On August 25, 2023, Kenya experienced its longest nationwide power blackout, lasting over 24 hours. Flights were grounded, restaurants and businesses closed, and more. But perhaps the most concerning of those affected were hospitals and medical centers, where electricity is essential for powering ventilators, vaccine coolers and other devices. Thanks to an on-site solar PV system, one Nairobi hospital was able to remain operational during the entire blackout without resorting to an expensive and polluting diesel generator. Its story shows how distributed renewable energy installations can deliver affordable and reliable electricity to sub-Saharan Africa’s many underserved hospitals and clinics. Read more.

The Shipping Industry Can’t Decarbonize without More Low-carbon Fuels

Maritime shipping is responsible for 80% of all global trade port to port, but it comes at a cost: If counted as a country, the sector would rank among the top 10 highest global polluters. This is a significant statement, since the first decade of the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s massive international infrastructure project, was dominated by fossil fuel investment. The country directed $52 billion to coal alone over the last 10 years. China’s commitment to a greener BRI is welcome news, but it may prove easier said than done. Read more.

The world’s three biggest car markets — China, the EU and United States — have seen big upticks in EV sales over the last few years, with sales near or well ahead of the global average. EV sales are still low in India and Japan, the world’s fourth- and fifth-largest car markets, but are beginning to grow.
