It takes courage and integrity to stand up for what’s right in today’s hyper-partisan politics. That’s why the guiding compass for servant leaders is not what’s in the best interests of their career or party, but in doing the right thing for their constituents and their country.
At New Politics, we’re fighting for a democracy where our leaders are values-driven. Sometimes that means standing their ground, sometimes that means having the humility and wisdom to change positions in the face of new information and what's happening on the ground in our communities.
Last week, another horrific mass shooting shook the nation, this time in Lewiston, ME. Lewiston just happens to be the district and hometown of New Politics-endorsed Congressman, Jared Golden, a Marine Corps veteran elected to Congress in 2018.
Rep. Golden is a passionate public servant with a deep commitment to representing his constituents and the communities in his district. He has previously been in opposition to a total assault weapons ban, but in the wake of the tragedy that unfolded in Lewiston, he did something many politicians lack the courage to do: he changed his mind. That’s exactly the kind of leadership we’re fostering here at New Politics.
You can read more about what changed for Jared in the wake of the shooting in the Bangor Daily News:
We applaud Rep. Golden for taking a principled stand to step up and defend his constituents against the pervasive epidemic of gun violence in our country. We hope others will follow his lead.
