Reuters ([link removed]) (10/31/23) reports: "U.S. President Joe Biden is unlikely to attend a gathering of world leaders in November focused on climate change, according to two U.S. officials and another person briefed on the event’s planning. The 28th meeting of the United Nations “Conference of the Parties” on climate, known as COP28, takes places from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, a major oil producer.Biden’s schedule was not fixed, could still change and was not official until it had been announced, the people warned. Two said that no final decision had been made. The White House said it had no updates on Biden’s travel plans. 'President Biden has led and delivered on the most ambitious climate agenda in history, both at home and abroad. Although we don’t have any travel updates to share at this time, the Administration looks forward to a robust and productive COP28,' a spokesperson said...Biden
skipped a summit of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in September, sending Vice President Kamala Harris in his place. Asked if she would attend COP28, a spokesperson for Harris said we don’t have any travel to announce.'"

(10/31/23) reports: "Whatever you think of the carbon tax as a policy, it’s days may be numbered. The same government that introduced it delivered the potentially fatal blow. All because of home heating oil. And all with seemingly little thought. Consider this: on October 24, in response to an opposition Conservative MP asking that the carbon tax be removed from home heating, a government minister rejected the idea. Carbon taxes 'put more money in the pockets of Canadians,' he said, and removing the tax would 'make pollution free again.' Fair enough. Agree or disagree, this has been the government’s main argument for years. But just three days later, the prime minister removed the carbon tax from heating oil in order to 'lower energy bills for Canadians.' It was a stunning reversal. And a highly damaging one...On top of all of this, the move complicates federal-provincial cooperation by irresponsibly inflaming regional tensions. (Heating oil is commonly used only in Atlantic Canada, where
Liberal fortunes have been collapsing.) There were already questionable regional inequalities in the system, of course. Québec, in particular, received favourable treatment. But the transparently political nature of this move makes it even worse."

(10/31/23) reports: "The Venezuelan socialist regime suspended an opposition leader’s victory weeks after striking an oil sanctions relief deal brokered by the Biden administration, which seeks democratic reforms in the country. Venezuela’s top court suspended the results of opposition leader María Corina Machado’s victory in last week’s primary election, citing the need to do so while information is collected for an investigation into the primary organizers’ alleged identity theft, money laundering and conspiracy, Axios reported. The suspension follows a Biden administration-brokered deal between the Venezuelan opposition and the regime of Venezuela’s socialist dictator Nicolas Maduro, in which the U.S. agreed on Oct. 18 to provide oil sanctions relief in exchange for the Maduro regime’s promise that next year’s presidential elections would be free, fair and monitored by international observers, State Department officials told reporters on a background call after the deal was
finalized. Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab, who is a member of Maduro’s United Socialist Party of Venezuela, has said that his office will spearhead the investigations into the opposition, while Machado and other opposition political figures have stated that the now-suspended results are fair and legitimate, according to Axios."
