Hi John,

We’ve just placed our Octo-activist Coral on the Thames outside the Houses of Parliament because we need the UK government to announce a Bill to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty in the King’s Speech next week.

We’ve seen how powerful campaigning is when the UK government announced a moratorium on deep sea mining earlier this week, an incredible campaign win that could not have happened without you.

But there’s still more to do. In the same week the moratorium on deep sea mining was announced, the government also announced they're unleashing more oil and gas drilling in the oceans, posing a huge threat to marine life. It’s clear they’re not taking ocean protection seriously.

So, will you join our Octo-activist and take action by contacting your MP? We have a number of ways you can do just that.

Despite the good news on deep sea mining, Rishi Sunak still needs to:

  • Immediately announce a new Bill to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty in the King’s Speech - this speech is where the government sets out its plans for legislation in the year ahead and it’s happening next week.
  • Support a full ban on deep sea mining - what they announced this week is just a temporary pause. What we need is a full ban on an industry that will further harm our oceans.

We have a short window to pressure the government to announce plans to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty in the King’s Speech so we can guarantee this Treaty is brought into UK law before the next election.

Can you join us and make sure the government delivers on its commitment to protecting the global oceans before the next general election?

Together we have made many governments listen over the last 52 years. It was pressure from thousands of people like you that meant the Global Oceans Treaty was signed earlier this year and why the government has announced a moratorium on deep sea mining. [3] Now we need to make these ocean protections permanent and legally binding to ensure this work is not undone.

Thank you for everything you do,

Anthony and the Oceans team
