Dear John,
It's not every day that Oprah calls.

But she did -- and she wanted to speak with me about the brave women and girls I work with who are stranded in Mexico by U.S. policies that have slammed the door on families fleeing violence.

My interview with Oprah, which comes out today on Apple TV, highlights the resilience of the women I work with every single day and their hope for their family's future.

Oprah wanted to show these women's stories to the world and give her viewers a way to help. So I told her how IRC, with its local partners, provides women with urgently needed support, including cash material assistance, safe spaces to express themselves and seek support, and counseling to help them recover from trauma.

The IRC was the first aid organization to have a unit devoted to women and girl's safety. My job involves helping women fleeing violence within their community and on their journey. Many are coming from places like El Salvador, where they say life is like a war zone.

One woman is murdered every 2.5 hours in Mexico, making it one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman.

The IRC's lifesaving programs in Mexico, and around the world, give women and girls the tools they need to get through such nightmares and reclaim their futures.

The journey to the border itself is dangerous.

But no one takes the decision to migrate lightly. Many have left behind harrowing situations -- persecution by gangs and cartels -- in Central America, Cuba, Brazil and Venezuela, where they and their families were no longer able to safely go about their daily lives.

I told Oprah that when they reach the border, women remain vulnerable to the same type of exploitation, abuse and the targeted violence that forced them to flee in the first place. And now changes to U.S. policies are putting them in even greater danger.
