I’d like to thank you for your support at the recent election. 



I often describe elections as a performance appraisal that MPs have every three years. I'm very grateful for your endorsement and I'll continue to work hard on the issues that matter locally.



Running an election campaign is not something one person can do effectively. It requires many people to help with organising events and meetings, publicity, printing and signwriting, fundraising, door-knocking . . . the list goes on.



The Taupō electorate is large and takes time to cover, so I rely on my hardworking team. I want to thank all of you that helped, in big ways or small. Your efforts are truly appreciated!



Moving forward



Ordinary votes are currently being counted again, and special votes (about 567,000 or 20 per cent of total votes this year) will be checked and counted by Friday. Then the final numbers will be known.



The last day for the return of the writ is 9 November 2023.



Going by preliminary results, I have a strong mandate to represent you in Parliament as I have since 2008.



Representing you



I want to remind you that, while I’m a National MP, my job is to represent all of you, no matter who or which party you voted for.



I will continue to work hard on your behalf and create opportunities to meet with you at Friendly Forums, Coffee Catch Ups and Clinics (see below) as well as at community events and on visits to organisations and businesses.



I enjoy meeting people in the various communities across the electorate and hearing your opinions about the direction New Zealand is headed in, and your ideas about how the country should be run. I have listened, and will continue to listen and take your ideas to Wellington.



Parliament will resume before Christmas. I've enjoyed the time during the election campaign when I've not had to be in Wellington as much.

He Kāinga o Iwiheke







It was great to attend the opening of the final affordable rental homes, He Kāinga o Iwiheke, in Tūrangi recently. As part of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa housing strategy, it provides affordable rentals and support to families in need.



Projects like this led by Māori for Māori, supported by other agencies, have fantastic outcomes.



End of Year School Prizegivings



End-of-year school prizegivings where I get to see the incredible achievement of our students are always a highlight for me.



Good luck to students from the electorate who are sitting end-of-year exams in coming weeks, and all the best for 2024.

Asian Clam Invasion Waikato River







Photo:NIWA. Clams can reach up to 2–3 cms, but are usually smaller.



If you’re making the most of the warmer spring weather by taking your boat out on Lake Karapiro, please check, clean and dry your boat and equipment to prevent the spread of Asian gold clams into other lakes and rivers. These tiny shellfish are an invasive pest which can produce up to 400 juveniles a day (or 70,000 each year).



Because the clam has been declared an Unwanted Organism under the Biosecurity Act, it is illegal to knowingly move or spread the shellfish or water that may contain it.

Roadworks



Just a reminder to factor some extra time into your journey if you’re travelling between Putāruru and Taupō later this month.



Road rebuilding will take place on SH1 near Ōruanui from Monday 13 November. It will take about a fortnight to complete.
