Of all the spooky and scary things on display this Halloween, there may be none scarier than what is happening in the House of Representatives.
Over the last week, we learned more about the new Speaker of the House, whose demeanor may mask the cruelty of his policy positions. I feel sure you have read lots of articles about his past statements and present positions. This week, we are starting to see his approach to his new role, and to governing in general. And it is scary. It jeopardizes not only keeping our government funded and functioning, but also our standing in the world and our support for democracy worldwide.
We already knew that the stakes for the 2024 elections could not be higher. What we have seen in recent weeks is merely a preview. And that’s why I am writing now—because we have to work every day from now to next November to make sure that we change the course we are on.
And on our course, we are hitting another marker along our path: the end-of-October fundraising deadline. Every day from now to next November, we will be working to hold on to this seat, win back the House, elect a new Senator from Texas, and hold on to the White House.
I know from experience that we can meet this moment and change the course we’re on. But we can only do it when we all show up in every way we can.
