John,

Just because House Republicans finally ended their month-long meltdown and elected a Speaker does not mean Congress is working again. And it certainly doesn’t mean our democracy is in the clear, John.

Speaker Mike Johnson is the most radical person to ever hold the Speaker’s gavel. It goes far beyond banning abortion and opposing marriage equality; he openly ridicules the separation of church and state. He has spent decades working, litigating and legislating for the white Christian Nationalist movement that seeks to remake our government into a dystopian theocracy based on their interpretation of the bible.

Criminalizing abortion nationwide with no exceptions. Criminalizing homosexuality even among consenting adults. Providing special legal immunity for pastors who refuse to perform marriages for same sex or interracial couples. Extending public education funding to private church schools. Mandating school prayer and teaching of creationism while imposing a nationwide “don’t say gay” law. Requiring a religious test for immigrants.

He rejects climate change, opposes any form of gun control, and as if that’s not enough: he voted against certifying the 2020 election results and was the lead architect of House Republicans’ specious lawsuit that tried to overturn the election in court. That means that if Republicans retain the House majority next year, Speaker Johnson would preside over the House when it convenes in January of 2025 – when Congress is supposed to certify the next Presidential election results.

I try not to be alarmist, but frankly John, there comes a time when we really should be alarmed. This is a threat not only to our core values and policy priorities, but to the pluralistic, secular character of our republic and our democratic institutions.

Even before choosing Speaker Johnson, this Congress was mired in chaos and dysfunction because of Team Extreme’s destructive MAGA politics. It’s unlikely to get better. We would be naive to think that Speaker Johnson, after decades of building his career on imposing extreme religious mandates on others through legislation and litigation, will suddenly govern in a moderate or reasonable way.

I hope you agree that surrendering our values and our democracy to Team Extreme is not an option. We simply can’t afford another 2 years of a Republican-led House, John. It’s up to us to take our country back by winning a resounding victory in next year’s elections so that we can get Congress working again.

Can I count on your contribution to help us organize early to take back the House?

Thanks for all you do, John. Your support really does make a difference.

Onward together!

Jared
