School Resource Officers

Over the past few months, we've witnessed a concerning situation unfold in our schools, one that demands our immediate attention. School resource officers (SROs) have been facing uncertainty due to changes in statewide school discipline laws, and it's crucial that we address this issue promptly. SROs play a vital role in ensuring the safety of our students, and we must provide them with the necessary clarity and guidance to do their job effectively. In this newsletter, we will discuss the significance of SROs and why it is imperative for Democrats and Republicans to collaborate on resolving this issue.

SROs are crucial for maintaining safety and support in our schools. The recent legislative changes lack clarity and guidance, hindering their effectiveness. As a result, police and sheriff departments have terminated SRO agreements. Even officials like Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt have concerns about legal repercussions for officers doing their job to keep students and teachers safe. We must trust and equip SROs to do their vital work.

Bipartisanship Action Needed Before Feburary

Amid these challenges, Senate Republicans have introduced a bill that aims to rectify the issues surrounding SROs, enabling our schools to reinstate these vital positions promptly. It's crucial for Democrats to join our effort and work together to find a solution.

Democrats, up to this point, have shown unwillingness to advocate for the convening of a special session, despite the mounting concerns regarding the safety of our schools. It is imperative to underscore that the safety and security of our children should not be taken for granted.

Our students' academic performance is also at risk. Recent test scores show declines in reading and math proficiency despite increased funding. The pandemic's impact on students is evident, but the Democrats' mandates have worsened the situation. We must focus on core skills and avoid excessive mandates that strain our school districts.

The past few months have seen events unfold around the SRO issue. MPPOA raised concerns, leading to SROs leaving public schools. Attorney General Keith Ellison provided an opinion but fell short of resolving the issue. Republicans in the legislature proposed a bipartisan solution, and Governor Tim Walz initially considered a special session.

It's clear that a permanent legislative solution is necessary. Waiting until February is not an option. We must collaborate, find common ground, and support our SROs to ensure our schools are safe and that our students succeed.

Let's prioritize our students' safety and academic growth. SROs play a vital role, and academic success requires a focused approach. By working together, we can make a positive impact on our community.
