With Election Day just a week away, I've been reflecting on why voting holds such immense importance, especially for someone like me — a Black woman. Voting is a fundamental function of democracy, and for the Black community, voting holds profound significance, rooted in a history of struggle for civil rights and equality. The legacy of slavery, Jim Crow laws, and ongoing racial disparities have meant that the Black community has had to fight tirelessly. However, leaders like Fannie Lou Hamer, Ida B. Wells, John Lewis, and others have paved a path of resilience and perseverance that has allowed us to be where we are today. From the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to today’s fight for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, these steps have shown us that the power and agency we have through our vote is something worth fighting for.
Voting is a way to honor the sacrifices of those who ensured that the progress we’ve made in the pursuit of equality continues to evolve and thrive. At When We All Vote, we know voting is the ultimate game-changer. So, no matter your background, voting is essential for all of us, and November 7th is the last day to ensure your voice is heard this year.
John, how will you show up for change?
