Today is Halloween―a day to linger a little longer on the spooky and scary.

I’m going to tell you a little more about my biggest fear: Losing.

John, I’ve worked for Social Security Works for 13 years. In that time, we’ve fought back as Presidents from both parties proposed cuts to Social Security, whether creating “death panels” for Social Security and Medicare, cutting off Social Security’s dedicated funding, or exploiting congressional procedure to force cuts.

We’ve won, every time. But we only have to lose once. Part of our Social Security system’s genius is that it’s very hard to change. That’s why it’s never missed a payment, through 88 years of World Wars, recessions, and government shutdowns. But the flip side is that once benefits are cut, they will be difficult to restore.

Together, we’ve stood up to Alan Simpson, Paul Ryan, Donald Trump, Kevin McCarthy, and Mitch McConnell, just to name a few. The new MAGA Speaker Mike Johnson is the latest in this long line.

Speaker Johnson used his very first speech last week to call for the “immediate” creation of a commission to destroy Social Security and Medicare―a commission that the Biden administration has rightly called a “Death panel for Medicare and Social Security.”
