We stay busy on multiple fronts here at Issue One as we continue our work to fix our broken political system and build an inclusive democracy that works for everyone.
We want to make sure we’re keeping you — the Issue One community — in the loop about all of that work and the progress we’re making. Here’s some of what happened in October:
Protecting Our Elections
We spearheaded a crosspartisan coalition that urged each of the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates to publicly reveal information about their top campaign fundraisers — often referred to as “bundlers” — on a regular basis throughout the 2024 election cycle. The effort was covered in Politico.
As part of our Faces of Democracy campaign, we’ve been featuring election workers from across the country to highlight the work they do on behalf of our democracy. Check out the latest installment of our Meet the Faces of Democracy series: a Q&A with Brianna Lennon, the county clerk of Boone County, Missouri!
We submitted a public comment to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) calling on them to prevent the use of deceptive generative artificial intelligence (AI) in political campaign ads.
Holding Big Tech Accountable
The problems that social media poses to kids and teens reverberate and have ramifications that impact our democracy at large. That’s why Issue One and our Council for Responsible Social Media (CRSM) is a partner in the “Safe Tech, Safe Kids” campaign led by Project Liberty in collaboration with 5Rights Foundation. Our aim is to put an end to addictive tech for kids. Learn more about the campaign.
To kickoff the “Safe Tech, Safe Kids” campaign, Issue One brought together stakeholders from across children’s advocacy, tech reform, pediatrics, educational, and other communities for a comprehensive look at how social media impacts children, and how we can advance meaningful solutions to protect kids online. Watch all of the panels and storyteller sessions now!
We commissioned a new poll from Citizen Data, which found that 67% of Americans believe Congress needs to do more to hold Big Tech companies accountable for the harms caused by their social media platforms. Check out the poll’s other findings.
Issue One’s CRSM hosted a virtual webinar that convened experts in national security, technology, and democracy to discuss the national security threats posed by social media, and how we can move beyond single-platform bans to comprehensive solutions. Watch the recording.
Issue One is the leading crosspartisan political reform group in Washington. We unite Republicans, Democrats, and independents in the movement to fix our broken political system.
