Dear John,
 

How did Sherrie Laurie go from a happily retired FedEx pilot to the executive director of Downtown Hope Center, a soup kitchen and women’s shelter in Anchorage, Alaska?

“I literally prayed and fasted for 40 days,” Sherrie laughs when she recalls the time she was asked to take the job. “And at the end of it, I said, ‘Well, all I can do is fail.’ But I figure, if God’s asking, then He’ll help. And He has — tremendously.”

God’s help was surely needed when Sherrie received a letter from the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission one day. A man had filed a formal complaint against Downtown Hope Center, claiming sex and gender identity discrimination after he was unable to gain access to the overnight women’s shelter…
