After being trapped for more than 50,000 years, zombie viruses are waking up.
It’s spooky, but true. As permafrost melts, dormant pathogens could potentially be released into the air, and serve as a haunting effect of climate change.
Scientists have found that viruses and even multi-cell organisms could survive the frozen permafrost for thousands of years, and if they wake up with rising temperatures and melting ice, we could be exposed to pathogens we haven’t seen in modern times. Scientists in Russia even woke up a 46,000-year-old roundworm, just by adding water to it.
Viruses that are trapped in the permafrost could soon come out. While it’s one of the less examined impacts of climate change, it could have one of the biggest impacts on our lives.
