** Young convicts in the Dry Dock: ongoing violations and delayed justice
------------------------------------------------------------

30 October 2023 – On 17 September 2023, approximately 28 young Bahraini detainees in the Dry Dock Detention Center began a new hunger strike in protest against the continued violations committed against them by the prison administration, and the neglect of the relevant state institutions to carry out their duties, notably the National Institution for Human Rights, and the Ombudsman.

The rights of children detained in the Dry Dock Detention Center are subject to serious violations, as most of the arrests are based on political backgrounds, and the victims are subjected to unfair trials. In 2011, the state security institutions launched a series of arbitrary arrest campaigns that affected various Bahraini regions and towns and included citizens of different age groups, including children who were not over the legal age at the time of their arrest, for participating in peaceful demonstrations in the movement demanding reform and democracy. Since that date, the scene has been repeated as part of the policies of suppressing freedom and encouraging impunity in Bahrain.

** Abdulla Mohamed AlDurazi
------------------------------------------------------------

26 October 2023 – Abdulla Mohamed AlDurazi, an 18-year-old Saudi citizen from the Qatif region in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, was arrested without an arrest warrant while walking alone on 27 August 2014. His detention has been marred by multiple human rights violations, including torture, enforced disappearance, solitary confinement, and an unfair trial. He was sentenced to death for alleged freedom of expression-related crimes committed when he was a minor. He is currently detained in the General Directorate Investigations prison in Al-Dammam, awaiting execution, as the Saudi Supreme Court upheld his death sentence on 8 August 2022, meaning he could be executed at any time without prior notice, in a clear violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, despite the 2020 SaudiRoyal Decree

On 16 October 2023, the UN Special Rapporteur on summary, extrajudicial, or arbitrary executions, issued apress release ([link removed]) , in which he urged “the Saudi judiciary and other institutions in Saudi Arabia to ensure that Abdullah AlDurazi’s execution is not carried out”.

** An overview of ADHRB’s participation in the work of the 54th session of the Human Rights Council
------------------------------------------------------------

11 October 2023 – Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) participated in the 54th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, held from 11 September to 13 October 2023.

During these sessions, the organization delivered eight oral interventions under four items, highlighting various human rights violations in Bahrain and Yemen. In partnership with other human rights organizations and male and female human rights activists, it also organized a symposium on the sidelines of the Council’s work, during which they raised concerns about the continued systematic violations against political prisoners in Bahrain and the necessity of their release.

ADHRB delivered five interventions related to the human rights situation in Bahrain under items 4, 5, and 6, and it made three interventions under items 4 and 8, two of which highlighted the violations committed against the Yemeni people.

** Sayed Qasim Jalil Abdullah
------------------------------------------------------------

12 October 2023 - Sayed Qasim Jalil Ali Abdullah is a young Bahraini from the village of Al-Dair in the city of Muharraq. He was 20 years old when he was arrested without judicial arrest warrant in 2018. He faced multiple human rights violations, including torture, enforced disappearance, and unfair mass trial. He was falsely charged with joining the “Bahraini Hezbollah Cell,” sentenced to ten years in prison, and is currently serving his sentence at Jau Prison.

Sayed Qasim has been arrested five times, all related to expressing opinions and participating in democratic activism. The first arrest was in November 2011, lasting nine days when he was only thirteen years old. He was arrested again during Ramadan (July/August) 2012, and the third arrest came a year later in July 2013, lasting a year. Before completing his first year out of prison, he was re-arrested in June 2015. The fifth and final arrest occurred on the morning of 26 January 2018, from his home by plainclothes officers affiliated with the Ministry of Interior, without presenting an arrest warrant or court summons or stating the reason for the arrest. This happened during a wide security force raid on several homes in the Al-Dair area, related to their participation in the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain.
