Dear Friend - Salaam Alaikum,
I hope you and your loved ones are doing as well as can be right now. The news out of Gaza is too much to bear and Muslim Advocates has been working round the clock [[link removed]] to support the movement for justice in Palestine against the domestic backlash it is facing. Though these times are desperate, we have always drawn strength from activists and artists banding together to fight back against injustice. These are the people we want to honor at Common Voices, Collective Action [[link removed]] , an in-person evening of solidarity happening this Wednesday, Nov. 1, in New York City.
The evening will include a live performance and discussion with Yassin Alsalman (aka NARCY) , an Iraqi multimedia artist, rapper, producer, award winning video director who has long been outspoken about Palestinian liberation. His work draws on his experience as a second-generation Iraqi immigrant and explores the role identity plays in the fight for social justice.
We will also hear from Kameelah Mu’Min Oseguera , who was in Palestine on Oct. 7. Kameelah is the founder and president of Muslim Wellness Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting healing and emotional well-being in the American Muslim community through dialogue, education, and training.
The evening will also feature music by Yelda Ali , an artist, author, and activist in her own right. Yelda is a celebrated voice of the Afghan diaspora who shares stories of her culture and upbringing. Additionally, you will be able to experience the visual art of Nzingah Oyo , a photographer and curator, whose work resists the reductive framing Muslim women are subjected to.
With Common Voices, Collective Action , we hope to create a space where activists and community members can draw solace, strength and inspiration from one another. If you are able to attend, we would love to welcome you on Wednesday evening in New York.
