In any classic horror film, there’s always a surefire way to get rid of a monster. Hunting vampires? You’ll need a stake through the heart. Chasing werewolves? Be sure to pack your silver bullets. Zombies? Always aim for the head. 

So what’s one of our weapons against the infinite reign of terror of our extreme right-wing Supreme Court? Term limits—specifically passing the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization (TERM) Act, a bill recently introduced in the House of Representatives.

No one deserves this much power for life. It’s time to stop the madness. In two clicks, send a pre-written email to your legislators, urging them to co-sponsor the TERM Act and help build Congressional support for Supreme Court term limits.

Right now, Supreme Court Justices enjoy a lifetime appointment that not even a zombie apocalypse could stop. The average tenure of a justice is 16 years, with the longest spending nearly 37 years in the role. Clarence Thomas just marked 32 years on the bench, using each consecutive year to sink his teeth in deeper to tear away at our human rights. 

The current Supreme Court is the most conservative court we’ve experienced in a century. The right wing of the Court could stay in the majority until at least 2065. Our crystal ball tells us this is a future we can’t live with. 

But Congress has solutions. One is already enormously popular: term limits. The already-introduced TERM Act would create 18-year terms for justices, establish regular Supreme Court nominations during every presidency, and create a Court that better represents the American people. 

No other constitutional democracy except the United States allows their justices to spend their entire lives on the bench. This is a nightmare we need to wake up from. 

It’s time to start taking down the monster that is our unchecked Supreme Court. A good first step is making sure your legislators co-sponsor the TERM Act and get their colleagues on board. In two clicks, email your lawmakers today and urge them to take action.
