Friend, I’ve got good news and bad news about our work to protect grizzly bears and wolves.

First, the bad news: Idaho passed an aggressive wolf-killing law that permits hunters and trappers to slaughter the vast majority of the state’s wolves. Idaho even offers wolf killers a bounty of up to $2,000 per wolf, and it allows them to use indiscriminate leg-trapping and neck-snaring devices that kill federally protected grizzly bears and other wildlife as well.

But here’s the good news: Thanks to funding from our supporters, we're suing to protect grizzly bears and wolves from Idaho’s inhumane trapping policy.

Grizzly bears and wolves are critical to healthy ecosystems across the Western United States. But that didn’t stop hunters and trappers from driving them to the verge of extinction, and it didn’t stop the Trump administration from removing wolves from the endangered species list. We fought both these threats and won, including a far-reaching victory in 2022 that reinstated Endangered Species Act protections for the wolves in 44 states — but not Idaho.

Now, Idaho authorizes unlimited wolf killing, often carried out by recreational trappers equipped with powerful leg-trapping and neck-snaring devices — and little mandated training. Paired with baits and other attractants, these restraining and killing devices account for the majority of Idaho’s wolf deaths each year. They also frequently injure and kill non-target animals, including federally protected grizzly bears, which are facing continued attacks on their own much-needed protections.

So Earthjustice is representing a coalition of 13 environmental groups in a lawsuit that challenges Idaho’s wolf-trapping policy.
