Johnson Critics Mistake Christianity, American Principles for 'Theocracy'
by Joshua Arnold
Washington is bursting with varied reactions to House Republicans electing U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) as speaker - ranging from "hooray!" to "who?" - but the strangest might be allegations that Speaker Johnson will turn America into a theocracy. "Welcome to the Republican Era of not even pretending they aren't forcing their religion on Congress and the American people," tweeted U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) on Wednesday, in reaction to a clip from Johnson's inaugural speech. "This is a slippery, dangerous slope to theocracy."

Retired Army General: Hamas Has Violated 'Every Law of Land Warfare That There Is'
by Sarah Holliday
As Israel began its ground invasion on the Gaza strip, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and his team are negotiating hundreds of hostages held by Hamas. But in addition to this are the approximately 600 American citizens and foreign nationals who are trapped inside Israel's target. According to Sullivan, Egypt has "prepared to allow American citizens and foreign nationals to come through the Rafah gate into Egypt," and Israel is on board with this course of action, but Hamas is preventing their departure from Gaza due to a "series of demands."

Mike Johnson's Worst Scandal Is Staying Married, Media Decides
by Suzanne Bowdey
Of the 469 members of Congress who call themselves Christians, the country has decided to pick on one: Mike Johnson. Apparently, it's not a crime to say you're a person of faith - it's a crime to act like one. Unfortunately, that irony is being driven home with ruthless clarity in a nation where a majority of the population (63%) not only identifies with the new speaker's faith but continues to elect leaders (87% of the House and Senate) just like him. So obviously, the issue isn't that Johnson loves Jesus. The issue is that Johnson brings Jesus to work.

House Dems Use Global Persecution Hearing to Decry 'Christian Nationalism' in the U.S.
by Arielle Del Turco
At a congressional hearing about global religious persecution on October 25, some House Democrats hijacked the event to fearmonger about a small school of political thought that espouses a position its proponents call "Christian nationalism." This hearing was held by the House Oversight Committee's Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs. Yet, rather than remain focused on the many urgent crises facing religious believers around the world - in Armenia, Nigeria, North Korea, and China to name a few - House Democrats chose to highlight the contrived problem of Christian nationalism in the United States.
