John,

Delegates gathered in Brighton for what's likely to be the last annual conference before a general election. Scroll down to find out what's going on in the party and how to help get the next generation of Green MPs elected🔽

Israel/Hamas conflict: The Green Party has called for an immediate ceasefire. In the House of Commons, Caroline Lucas urged the Government to back the UN’s calls for a ceasefire to prevent thousands more deaths, while Global Solidarity spokesperson Carne Ross told LBC the only route to long term security and safety for Israelis and Palestinians is a political solution. In an article for Metro, Caroline said all MPs should condemn the atrocities, speak out against antisemitism and islamophobia, and do all they can to de-escalate the violence.

Storm Babet: Co-leader Adrian Ramsay called for more to be done to protect people from flooding after the devastation in Norfolk and Suffolk caused by Storm Babet: "The government is failing appallingly when it comes to flood risk management. We urgently need a long-term plan to improve natural flood defences and reassess planning regulations which will still allow for new building on flood plains." Adrian said flood defence was previously the responsibility of public water companies which was another good reason to renationalise them.

King's Speech: Caroline Lucas has written to the Prime Minister setting out five pieces of legislation that should be included in next month’s Kings Speech. These are the Clean Air Bill (Ella’s Law), Renters Reform Bill, Just Fossil Fuel Phase Out Bill, Green New Deal Bill, and the English Right to Roam Bill. Caroline writes that 2023 is on track to be the hottest year on record and the Government must take the opportunity to reclaim the UK’s climate leadership by setting out a legislative agenda that tackles the climate and nature crises.

The party officially launched its campaign to get four Green MPs elected to parliament in Brighton. In their leaders address, Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay told delegates the party had quadrupled councillor numbers in recent years so getting four MPs elected was realistic, and necessary to hold the next Government to account on climate and tackling inequalities. The pledged to give renters powers to force landlords insulate their homes as part of a £145 billion package to "make every house, flat and bedsit a proper home".

The Four for 24 campaign got conference off to a brilliant start and over the following three days upbeat delegates adopted policies to ban high carbon advertising, back a four day week, and call for a public inquiry into HS2 mismanagement. “It is clear that whatever anyone’s views on HS2, the Conservatives have hopelessly mismanaged it,” Natalie Bennett said of the decision to scrap the Northern leg of HS2. "To restore trust, we need to ensure that lessons are learnt from this disastrous experience”.

The party's fiftieth anniversary was also marked. In a packed reception, in a room lined with personal stories of party members over five decades, Elise Benjamin from the party’s International Committee read out messages from Green leaders around the world, while co leaders Adrian Ramsay and Carla Denyer, Mary Clegg CEO and Caroline Lucas MP paid tribute to the contribution of activists past and present, highlighted the progress made since the 2010 breakthrough and called for a sustained campaign to get the next generation of Green MPs elected.
