Dear  john,

I hope that you and your family are well and enjoying the beginning of fall. It’s been an eventful autumn so far in Washington – below is a look back and a preview of what’s to come as we head into the holiday season.

Speaker Mike Johnson

There’s a new Sheriff in town. As a refresher, Kevin McCarthy was removed as Speaker on October 3, 2023. That kicked off a flurry of activity to replace him, as Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan, and Tom Emmer all won the Republican Conference’s approval as Speaker Designee. However, none of these candidates could cross the finish line.

After lots of dramatics and skullduggery from the Swamp behind the scenes, we came together behind now-Speaker Mike Johnson.

Speaker Johnson is a strong conservative and good man who has a tough fight ahead of him. I’ll be praying for his success as Speaker and for the success of our nation, and I hope you’ll join me in doing so.

WATCH: an update from the Capitol steps

I took some time last week to speak to Daniel Horowitz of Conservative Review about the new Speaker.

What Comes Next?

Immediately following Speaker Johnson’s election, the House passed a resolution affirming that we will stand with our ally, Israel, in the wake of the horrific October 7th terrorist attacks by Hamas.

We then got back to work on debating and voting on amendments to the Energy and Water appropriations bill, ultimately passing the bill on Friday afternoon. We are one step closer to passing all 12 single subject spending bills, which allows us to review every program line-by-line when funding the government. I will do all I can to ensure that future government funding packages include spending cuts and strong conservative priorities. The next few weeks will be busy with the next government funding debate, and I will keep you updated via this newsletter and social media.

The Last Few Weeks in Weaponized Government

Last week, as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee’s Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability Subcommittee, I led a hearing evaluating DHS’s effort to combat products made in China using forced labor.

The Chinese Communist Party’s exploitation of Uyghurs for forced labor is not only inhumane, but also enriches the Chinese government at the expense of American manufacturers and workers - especially our American textile industry.

Our subcommittee will continue investigating this important issue and determine how we can stop harmful practices that are hurting North Carolina companies.

I also participated in a  full committee hearing l week on the threats posed by the Iranian regime to our nation’s security.

Recent reporting revealed that the Biden administration allowed the Iranian regime to infiltrate the highest levels of the US government all while allowing millions of illegal immigrants to flow across the southern border.

This matter deserves the strongest possible scrutiny, and we will conduct vigorous oversight to hold those responsible accountable.

In some positive news, due to the work of our select subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, the IRS is revoking their policy of unannounced visits to taxpayer’s homes.

The IRS exploited this policy to sow fear among Americans, and it won’t be missed. The committee’s full report exhaustively catalogues the IRS’s long history of civil rights abuses, including these visits.
