In less than 24 hours, a tropical storm approaching the coast unexpectedly
transformed into a devastating category 5 hurricane.

Storm Otis, fueled by record-warm coastal waters, ravaged the Mexican city
of Acapulco on October 25. The impact was far worse than anyone had
anticipated, with monstrous 265 km/h winds whipping the city, instead of
the forecasted 100 km/h. At least 39 lives were lost, and hundreds of
apartment buildings were torn to shreds. The images are heart-wrenching.

Otis is a stark reminder of the unpredictability of our dangerous new
climate reality. It serves as an urgent call to action.

When Mike introduced Motion 92 [1] in Parliament urging a windfall tax on
Big Oil profits, he took aim right at the heart of the climate crisis
driving extreme weather events. LAST WEEK, WE LEARNT FROM THE PARLIAMENTARY
BUDGET OFFICER (PBO) THAT THIS TAX could provide Canada with an additional
$4.2 billion [2] to transition our economy away from fossil fuels, combat
climate change, reduce inequalities, and prepare our communities for the
