We were ghoulishly close to a Government Shutdown

Lucy is facing a critical end-of-month fundraising deadline tomorrow at midnight. Donate to help her hit her goal →

John - Halloween is tomorrow, but here on Team Lucy we’re still recovering from the three-week-long ordeal we just went through as ardent followers of Congress. The “House Speaker Crisis” was scarier stuff than pumpkins, ghosts, and trick-or-treating.

First: Steve Scalise, who frighteningly called himself “David Duke, without the baggage” and Jim Jordan, one of the most prolific and vocal House GOP lawmakers who assisted Donald Trump in his efforts to overturn the election, couldn’t make the cut. They were deemed to have too many skeletons hiding in their closets by moderate Republicans.

Next: Tom Emmer - who was chair of the NRCC when they consistently accused Lucy of being a “liar,” “deranged,” and “politicizing mass shootings” - wasn’t able to pass the muster because the ghost of Donald Trump said he was a “RINO” who voted to certify the results of the 2020 election. Not scary enough for the far-right.

Finally, House Republicans found someone they could all agree on – Rep. Mike Johnson, who many of us had never heard of. And just look at the spine-chilling stances Johnson has taken on guns, abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and more as the press has scrutinized his record since he took the speaker’s gavel:

By nominating an election denier and an extremist as speaker, we have no choice but to do everything we can to flip the House back to Democratic control in 2024 if we want to keep making progress on important issues like gun safety, workers’ rights, education, health care access, child-care funding, and more.

If you can pitch in an end-of-month donation to help Lucy and House Democrats build up campaigns that can take back the House in 2024, we’d very much appreciate your support after an exhausting and chaotic month in Congress.
