News from Congressman Mike Levin

Dear Neighbor,

There has been a lot of news coming from Washington and across the world these past few weeks, and I wanted to take a moment to share an update on my recent work for you.

New MAGA Speaker of the House

After shutting down the House of Representatives for three weeks, House Republicans elected a new Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson. Speaker Johnson has made clear that he is a MAGA extremist. He was an architect of former President Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election, wants to ban abortion nationwide, is among the most anti-LGBT members of Congress, wants to dramatically cut Social Security and Medicare, and denies climate change. While I’m deeply concerned about what Johnson’s Speakership will mean for the American people, my priority will always be working with reasonable colleagues on both sides of the aisle to deliver common sense results for our district.

Telephone Town Hall

Rep. Mike Levin hosts his telephone town hall

Last week, I hosted a telephone town hall and had the opportunity to answer your questions directly. Thank you to everyone who dialed in—hearing from constituents is my favorite part of the job. Conflict in Israel and Gaza

I am deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, and I reject the acts of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in our country that have grown more common in recent weeks—they have no place here or anywhere. As the war has continued, I signed a letter calling on Egypt to work with the U.S. and Israel to allow humanitarian aid to flow from Egypt into Gaza, and I’m grateful that aid is moving to the area. Additionally, I recently cosponsored a resolution calling for the immediate release of hostages in Gaza, and was relieved to see the release of several civilians taken by Hamas. Hamas started this war with the unjustified murder, abuse, and kidnapping of Israeli civilians and I continue to support Israel’s efforts to free its citizens.

Charlesetta Reece Allen

I have proudly introduced a bipartisan bill to name the historic U.S. Postal Service office located at 517 Seagaze Drive in downtown Oceanside after Charlesetta Reece Allen. Ms. Allen was a trailblazer in Oceanside who opened the first Black-owned business in Oceanside, was the first President of the North San Diego County NAACP Branch, and founded the Oceanside Girls Club. The bill is currently supported across by bipartisan 20 cosponsors, including the full Orange County and San Diego County Congressional delegations.

Improving Safety in Military Barracks

I am committed to ensuring safe and humane living conditions for our service members. I recently led a bipartisan letter, signed by 30 Representatives, to Department of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin urging him to urgently address unsafe living conditions in military barracks by implementing the U.S. Government Accountability Office’s 31 barracks improvement recommendations.

Rep. Mike Levin with Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra

On October 6th, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra joined me to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and announce $333,000 in funding for the Community Schools Bridges2Health research project aimed to improve health outcomes for Latino community members in our region. The research project is a partnership between California State University of San Marcos’ National Latino Research Center, Vista Community Clinic, and Vista Unified School District. As a result of these grant funds, more families in our district will have access to care.
