It has been devastating to witness the horror and escalation of violence in Israel and Gaza over the last few weeks.
I unequivocally condemn Hamas and their October 7 terrorist attack that killed more than 1,400 Israelis, including children and elders. The grief and trauma that this attack has caused for the Israeli and Jewish communities across the world is palpable, and my heart breaks for everyone impacted.
I am also devastated by the death of more than 8,000 innocent Palestinian civilians who have been egregiously killed by Israeli airstrikes in the weeks that followed. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening daily, and millions of Palestinian civilians continue to lack access to food, fuel, drinking water, and now the internet. There are also many U.S. citizens, including families from Massachusetts, who remain stranded in Gaza and who have faced relentless bombing as they try to flee for safety.
Let me make it plain: the murder of innocent Israeli civilians by Hamas is horrific and unacceptable. And the murder of innocent Palestinian civilians by Israel is a horrific and unacceptable response.
Vengeance should not be a foreign policy doctrine. Our humanity is at stake. That’s why I’m calling for a ceasefire now to save civilian lives and facilitate the safe return of hostages, the evacuation of Americans, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
We cannot continue to stand idly by as this death toll continues to climb. Nor can we be complicit in this bloodshed.
As a person of faith, I see this issue clearly: Saving civilian lives — including Israeli and American hostages and the Palestinians trapped in Gaza — must be the priority.
James Baldwin said it best: the children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe. When a mother or father cries out in grief, their piercing screams sound the same regardless of their religion or the nation of their birth. This is about our shared humanity.
We were sent to Washington with a clear mandate to lead, to center the marginalized, and to uplift the voices of the unheard. Families are crying out for survival. The children of the world are watching, and history has its eyes on us.
We must respond: Ceasefire now.
