John, I’m writing to you from Michigan, where we could soon become the next state to join the National Popular Vote Compact.
And if we do, this national effort to fix the broken Electoral College would be just FIFTY electoral votes away from the 270 required to take effect, which is a HUGE milestone!
But the clock is ticking, and we have only a week or two left to sign onto this commonsense solution – so I’m asking Common Cause members like you from across the country to lend their voices to this effort. Add your name to my petition to Michigan lawmakers in support of National Popular Vote today.
Remember, two of the past five presidents have taken office WITHOUT winning a majority of votes nationwide – and only won because of the broken Electoral College.
Here’s how National Popular Vote fixes that: once enough states agree to award their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the most nationwide votes, we can ensure our presidents are truly elected by the people. One person, one vote – just like any other position we elect for.
And that's why I’m coming to you, John.
We expect our legislative session to end within days, so this is our last chance to keep the momentum going and hit this milestone before the 2024 election. We need to show the Michigan legislature that democracy activists across the country are watching and want them to act NOW.
Help the Common Cause Michigan team: Add your name to our petition urging the Michigan legislature to pass National Popular Vote this session.
Thanks for all you do,
Shannon Abbott, Outreach and Engagement Manager
