John, More than 40 states sued Meta last week, arguing that Facebook and Instagram have deliberately designed to keep users, especially children, addicted to these sites. They allege Meta has not been transparent about the harms caused by these platforms, disregarding health concerns in pursuit of profit. The negative effects of social media and Big Tech are well-documented. Meta, Google, Amazon, Apple, Twitter, and others have taken control of the internet, the dominant medium of all modern communication and commerce. The algorithmic and business models of major tech companies rely on promoting extreme content and fostering addiction in users. They have engineered interfaces to keep users hooked on their platforms, to create and sell databases of personal information of all Americans, and to promote and amplify dangerous disinformation and violence, as we saw in the lead-up to and during the January 6th insurrection. This has created a grave threat to our democracy and our people. That’s why we need the Big Tech Accountability Act. This proposed legislation is designed to hold social media companies accountable for engaging in targeted amplification of disinformation and threats of violence on their online platforms for profit, as well as to protect online personal privacy and freedom against commercial exploitation. This legislation forces major tech companies to change the way they do business. Tell Congress: Hold Big Tech accountable. The lawsuits leveled against Meta last week seek to outlaw Meta's design features under state consumer protection laws carrying significant financial penalties, as well as force the company to make changes to Facebook and Instagram that would make them safer for young people. But this won’t be enough to address the full scope of harm Big Tech has wrought on its users. With the internet now being an integral part of society and the primary mode of communication for millions of people nationwide, we must ensure that Americans have control over their personal data and that social media companies are held accountable when they engage in targeted amplification and threats of violence on their platforms.
