Hi friends, October is LGBTQ+ History Month. Throughout this month, I’ve reflected on its significance - and the real and lived experiences our friends and loved ones in this community are facing - and I didn’t want to let the month end without sharing some thoughts with you.
The history of the LGBTQ+ community in this country is one of resilience and resistance - of fighting for the right to simply exist, to love freely and openly, and to be guaranteed the same legal rights and protections as everyone else.
This month, we remember some of the most pivotal moments in this struggle - like the Stonewall riots that ignited the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, the assassination of Harvey Milk, and the suffering this community endured at the hands of our government’s inaction during the AIDS epidemic.
And we celebrate the incredible progress we’ve made - like the 2015 landmark Supreme Court decision that made marriage equality the law of the land, the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in our military, and the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act just last year.
But this month is also an important opportunity to reflect on whether we’re living up to our values and doing everything we can to ensure the LGBTQ+ community can access the same opportunities to thrive - and feel the same acceptance, love, and safety as the rest of us.
To truly acknowledge and celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, we have to be clear-eyed about the bigotry that is spreading across the country, and commit to working against it. Trans and gender non-conforming Americans are being targeted by outrageous, hateful legislation in statehouses across the country, and in Washington, D.C., my GOP colleagues just installed an anti-LGBTQ+ extremist as Speaker of the House.
We have to fight back against this rising violence and hatred. There’s no other way forward. I’m committed to celebrating, standing with, and working to protect the LGBTQ+ community not just this month, but every day of the year. I hope you’re with me.
Thanks for being here and for reading to the end. I’m grateful to stand side by side with you in this fight.
-Sara
