Dear Jack,

In our last email, we talked about the fact that America’s wild horses and burros are federally protected animals. In 1971 they were declared to be “living symbols of the historical and pioneer spirit of the West,” and thus, a federal agency — the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) — has been tasked with preserving these iconic animals for the past 50 years.

Today, BLM holding facilities hold more captive wild horses and burros than ever before in history. Its roundup and stockpile system has reached its breaking point. Join us in taking action to put an end to this failed system. → [[link removed]]

[link removed] [[link removed]]In an effort to move horses and burros into private care, the BLM launched an “Adoption Incentive Program” (AIP), which pays individuals $1,000 per animal to adopt up to four wild, unhandled BLM mustangs and burros a year.

But rather than landing these animals in safe homes, the AIP has emboldened people who seek to exploit the program for their own financial gain. Our investigations team has uncovered sickening abuse by individuals adopting wild horses and burros, collecting the cash incentive payments, and then dumping these animals like trash at slaughter auctions.

We’ve documented one family that has already taken over $100,000 in taxpayer funds! And so far, 43 of their “adopted” animals have been documented at kill pens.

To date, the federal government has refused to end the cash incentives for adoption, so we’re calling on fierce horse and burro advocates like you, Jack, to join us. Will you contact the BLM now and urge them to STOP the AIP’s cash incentive payments? [[link removed]]

TAKE ACTION → [[link removed]]

Our findings on the link between the AIP and the slaughter industry were published in an explosive New York Times report and have resulted in public outrage and calls for action from members of Congress.

America’s iconic mustangs and burros deserve better. Will you please join us in being a voice for the voiceless and demanding that the BLM end the AIP’s cash incentive payments? [[link removed]]

Thank you,

AWHC Team
