Tell Congress: Support the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act!
John,
Plastic waste can be found in almost every corner of the planet. It lasts hundreds to thousands of years, and its toxic remains pose serious challenges.
Fracking produces ethane, the raw material used to make plastics. Since more fracking leads to more profit in plastics, Big Oil is on a mission to build even more dirty infrastructure and continue flooding the market with plastics.
The Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act was reintroduced in Congress this week by Senator Jeff Merkley (OR) and Representative Jared Huffman (CA). This important legislation would reduce plastic pollution and help build a safer, healthier, and more sustainable future by:
Shifting the burden of our plastic pollution nightmare to where it belongs — on the corporations.
Establishing aggressive reduction for single-use plastic.
Reducing and banning certain single-use plastic products that are not recyclable.
Pressing pause on new plastic facilities until critical environment justice and health protections are put in place.
The Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act is the most comprehensive set of policy solutions around plastic pollution ever to be introduced in Congress. Several states have already passed laws to reduce plastic pollution and ban single-use plastic bags — now, we can do it across the country.
