Bill Alert: House Bill 500 & 509 Biological Sex Matters.

This year, 2020, marks 100 years since women's suffrage. Idaho was the fourth state to give women the right to vote and the first to do it by constitutional amendment. Since then, women across the country have made a strong impact on the communities and our nation.

Little did those women activists know that within 100 years of women being given the right to vote and recognized by the law, that our nation would be trying to wipe women out of the law completely by taking biological sex out. Within the last few years across the country, we have seen laws that completely discredit biological sex and are redefining it all together. As the Women’s Liberation Front wrote in a recent Supreme Court brief: “Legally redefining ‘female’ as anyone who claims to be female results in the erasure of female people as a class. If, as a matter of law, anyone can be a woman, then no one is a woman, and sex-based protections in the law have no meaning whatsoever.”

Is this how we thank our women?

Biological sex matters. Recognizing biological sex protects the health, safety, and privacy of ALL Idahoans. When sex is defined by gender markers rather than biology, male and female terms are void of meaning. By allowing biological sex to be a game of mad lib, we leave everyone, from insurance companies and medical professionals to law enforcement, feminists and pastors, sports teams without language to accurately communicate about biological differences.

This session Representative Ehardt and Representative Young have put forward legislation to protect Idahoans: House Bill 500 protecting Title 9 sports and House Bill 509 protecting vital statistics records. These bills both passed the house and are currently in the Senate. Use our new
“Contact Your Legislators” tool to encourage our Senators to pass House Bills 500 and 509.

It will only take a minute, but will make all the difference for the state of Idaho and future generations!
Biological Sex Matters
By Representative Julianne Young

Biological sex is real.  It is scientifically discoverable, even before birth, and genetically encoded in every cell of the body.  Archaeologists can distinguish it even centuries after death. Biological sex, like other identifying information collected on birth certificates, is a verifiable material fact.
