Gov. Justice breaks ground, announces naming of Charles Calvin Rogers Veterans Nursing Facility

Gov. Justice led a groundbreaking event for a much-anticipated new veterans nursing facility in Beckley. Gov. Justice joined veterans, state and elected officials, project managers, and directors from the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance for the ceremony.

Gov. Justice also announced that the facility will be named in honor of a Southern West Virginia Vietnam Veteran and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient: Fayette County native Charles Calvin Rogers. U.S Army Major General Rogers, a native of Claremont who died in 1990, earned the Medal of Honor following acts of heroism that took place near the Cambodian border on November 1, 1968.

“This is a truly special day for West Virginia and for our veterans, especially our veterans in Southern West Virginia,” Gov. Justice said. “This facility is going to be one of the best in the country, and it should be, because that’s what our veterans deserve. It's especially meaningful because we get to honor General Charles Calvin Rogers, who is a true American military hero and one of our own.”

Gov. Justice announces $3.8 million in grant funding opportunities for West Virginia senior centers now available

Gov. Justice announced $3.8 million in grant funding opportunities for West Virginia senior centers are now available, with priority given to centers most in-need of additional aid.

In response to the reduction of federal COVID-19 relief funds for nutrition and senior centers in May 2023, Gov. Justice has earmarked $3.8 million in funding opportunities to support the state's senior centers.

“There is no way we are going to let people go hungry or go without the resources they need to make it through the holiday season,” Gov. Justice said. “We have this money to use, and we are always going to try our best to take care of our people, especially our seniors. That is exactly what this money is for, and there isn’t a better use for it than this.”

Gov. Justice visits Ramage Elementary to applaud progress of GameChanger, celebrate Red Ribbon Week

Gov. Justice visited Ramage Elementary to check in with students on the progress of the GameChanger Prevention Education Program, help deliver a $114,000 check from Boone Memorial Health and ParMar Stores, and acknowledge the importance of Red Ribbon Week in West Virginia.

Ramage Elementary is one of 55 schools across 18 counties participating in the GameChanger Program, a substance misuse prevention movement driven by students.

Gov. Justice, who serves as the program’s head coach, also met with students from Scott High School, Van High School, Sherman Junior High School, and Madison Middle School, all of which joined the Program this year, giving Boone County five GameChanger schools.

Gov. Justice invites students to participate in annual Almost Heaven Governor’s Art Exhibition

Gov. Justice, the West Virginia Department of Tourism, and the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History (WVDACH) invite all West Virginia students in grades K-12 to participate in the 2024 Almost Heaven Governor’s Art Exhibition.

Entries are currently being accepted, and the deadline for submissions is Dec. 13, 2023 (hand-delivered or postmarked no later than Dec. 6). Only one entry may be submitted per student.

Designed to showcase student creativity and the arts, this year’s exhibition is a call for one-of-a-kind postcard designs illustrating star gazing at your favorite West Virginia park or public lands. Selected postcard artwork will later be used by the Department of Tourism to personally invite travelers to Almost Heaven.

First Lady Cathy Justice and the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History invite West Virginians of all ages, including artists of all disciplines, to create and submit hand-crafted ornaments to be displayed on a Christmas tree at the West Virginia Culture Center this holiday season.

Celebrating its 12th anniversary as a First Lady initiative, Artistree 2023 asks West Virginia residents and artists to create an ornament that “Celebrates Christmas in West Virginia.”
