It’s Been a Busy Week in D.C.

New Speaker of the House
The House of Representatives elected Mike Johnson as the new Speaker of the House. Now it’s time to get to work to secure our border, cut reckless spending, and stand by our ally Israel. We wasted no time getting started on doing just that.
Cutting Reckless Spending
The House of Representatives took action this week to start cutting big budget spending packages that have contributed to sky-rocketing inflation. Yesterday, I helped pass the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2024. This legislation bolsters funding for national security, energy security, and economic competitiveness while helping curb wasteful government spending.
At the same time, this legislation ends President Biden’s Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule. This misguided rule empowered the federal government to basically regulate every mud puddle in the country. The impact of the rule has devastated farmers who have the right to make decisions regarding their own land.
On top of that, this bill allocates essential funding for the ongoing enhancement of our nuclear weapons stockpile and infrastructure, while scraping billions in wasteful funding for unrelated Green New Deal policies.
Standing By Israel
The House of Representatives also passed a resolution to show our unwavering support for our closest ally in the Middle East. That we will stand with Israel and its people as they confront violent Hamas terrorists threatening their very existence. You can read the resolution in support of Israel here.
As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, I brought attention to the need to enforce financial sanctions against Iran during a hearing this week. As the largest state sponsor of terrorism, President Biden should have never allowed Iran access to $6 billion worth of oil assets. I’m working to make sure this never happens again.
Saving Taxpayers Thousands of Dollars
Starting this Sunday, Milwaukee’s streetcar known as “the Hop” will begin offering passenger service on the new “L-Line.” This route will run through a closed construction site once a week. The only reason this non-viable route will be running is to satisfy a federal grant requirement that mandates the streetcar service start on October 31.
Operating this useless route will cost Milwaukee taxpayers thousands of dollars. That’s why, I called on U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to waive the federal grant requirement and stop this government waste. Milwaukee taxpayers should not be footing the bill to provide a meaningless service.
On Wisconsin,
Bryan Steil Member of Congress
