Republicans in Congress must stand by a simple line in the sand: no Ukraine aid without also securing our border with meaningful policy reforms.
This week I led a press conference that outlined my plan to do just that. If we beat Russia and secure our border, America wins. We must do both. Both are in our interest.
Republicans must understand that this is the only way we will get meaningful border security. This is our one chance. There is no other legislative vehicle other than Ukraine aid that Biden wants badly enough. So we must negotiate border security into it.
We can do this. Biden already proposed $14 billion for the border in the supplemental spending package he submitted to Congress. But we know that’s not enough. We know you need policy reform along with the funding.
If we let Russia win, our deterrence is screwed for the next 50 years. Expect dictators like Putin to keep starting wars and watch American influence diminish while China’s increases.
But we can’t keep fighting that battle while Texas is invaded. We must do both. This must be the grand bargain.
