North Carolina Republicans have just passed into law new gerrymandered congressional and state legislative maps.

Extreme Republican politicians have decided they know best. Their maps were drawn in secret, with no public comment after they were released, and passed within a week. They have proven over and over again that their primary allegiance is to their own political self-interest — not to our democracy and certainly not to upholding the will of North Carolina voters.

By choosing their voters rather than letting the voters choose their representatives, Republicans have all but assured themselves at least three additional seats in Congress and near supermajorities in the legislature.

Let’s call this what it is: an egregious abuse of power and a threat to our democracy.

I’ll be honest, this is a setback, but I believe our democratic system is precious and we have a duty to protect it. I have spent my career fighting to safeguard voting rights and ensure that all Americans can make their voices heard.

That’s why I am running to continue representing Wake County in Congress. I intend to win this seat, defeat this assault on our democracy and deliver real results for the people of Wake County and North Carolina.
