Here are some recent updates.

  • In a win for voters, an Arizona judge rejected a right-wing legal group's request to temporarily ban drop boxes in the state. The group filed a lawsuit alleging that drop boxes violate state election law. Litigation will continue.

  • California advocacy groups urged Secretary of State Shirley Weber (D) to take action regarding Shasta County's indication that it will attempt to hand count ballots for the upcoming November elections, despite a new law making the move illegal.

  • The Republican National Committee and North Carolina Republican Party moved to defend the state's new voter suppression law Senate Bill 747. Three lawsuits argue that the law illegally suppresses voters and violates federal and state law and the U.S. Constitution.

  • A Colorado judge denied former President Donald Trump's motion to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to remove him from the state's 2024 presidential ballot due to his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection.

The courts are jam-packed with democracy litigation next week.

  • On Monday, trial will begin in a lawsuit seeking to keep Trump off the ballot in Colorado due to his involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection. Trial will last all week.

  • Also on Monday, there will be a hearing in a lawsuit filed by conservatives challenging Minnesota's voting rights restoration law.

  • On Tuesday, oral argument will be held in the Florida Appeals Court in the Florida congressional redistricting case. A lower court struck down the map for violating the state constitution by diminishing the voting power of Black voters in North Florida.

  • Also on Tuesday, a hearing will be held in a Wisconsin lawsuit challenging the state’s absentee voting rules.

  • On Wednesday, trial will begin in Michigan in a lawsuit filed by Black voters that claims the state’s legislative districts violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

  • Also on Wednesday, the appellee's response brief is due in the Arkansas congressional redistricting challenge case.

  • On Thursday, oral argument will be held in another 14th Amendment challenge to Trump’s eligibility, this time in the Minnesota Supreme Court.
